Calvin's Story
The dog who inspired a mission to keep pets with the families who love them.
The Boy Behind the Mission
In 2013, I met Calvin at a local shelter adoption event at my job. He was just two months old, and from the moment I picked him up, we knew—we were each other’s person.
The shelter told me he would probably grow to about 25 pounds. Calvin apparently had other plans. 😂 He grew into a 65-pound Beagle/Hound mix with a big personality and an even bigger place in my life.
Calvin was food-motivated, loved his naps and being outside, and would choose attention from people over other dogs any day. The exception? Small dogs. He absolutely loved them—and apparently had no problem letting them boss him around. Even his doggy daycare knew Calvin belonged with the little-dog crew because that was where he thrived.
He was affectionate, incredibly well-behaved, spoiled down to the bone, and my little broke bestie. More than anything, he was my fur baby.
I eventually bought a home with a backyard in large part because Calvin had outgrown apartment life and deserved room to enjoy himself. And when the world shut down during COVID in 2020, he became the best company I could have asked for.
He was there for so many chapters of my life. I never imagined how suddenly ours would change.
The Hardest Goodbye
In March 2021, at just seven years old, Calvin was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Getting to that diagnosis meant weeks of appointments and trips between different veterinary providers. The expenses added up quickly, and keeping up became a financial strain.
Through it all, Calvin was still Calvin. His personality hadn't disappeared. He wasn't acting like a different dog. But he could no longer properly relieve himself, and trying had become painful. Eventually, his veterinarian told me that the kindest thing I could do was let him go.
I had to make the heart-wrenching decision to say goodbye to my child.
The loss was so painful that I told myself I would never have another pet. For nearly three years, I grieved Calvin. Being home was difficult because I could still feel him everywhere.
Then something changed.
One day, I felt like Calvin was telling me it was okay. When I thought about him, the tears didn't come first anymore. I smiled.
I knew I was finally ready to love another fur baby.
Today, Calvin has a little memorial in the backyard of the home I bought with him in mind. I see it whenever I'm sitting outside—a reminder that while his life ended far too soon, his impact on mine never did.
From Heartbreak to Purpose
Eventually, I opened my heart to another fur baby—and somehow, one became two. And with them came a reminder of something I had experienced with Calvin: veterinary care is expensive. Even with pet insurance, families can still be left with significant bills for medications, procedures, emergencies, and ongoing care.
It made me think about how many other people must be struggling with the same thing.
How many families are faced with choosing between a veterinary bill they simply cannot afford and the pet they love? How many pets are surrendered to shelters because their families can't afford their care? How many people have had to say goodbye sooner than they should because treatment was financially out of reach?
No one should have to make an impossible decision about a beloved pet solely because they can't afford the care that could help them.
Pets are family. They feel love, and they give it back to us completely. They deserve every reasonable chance we can give them to live happy, healthy lives with the people they love.
What began as my heartbreak eventually became a purpose.
That is how Calvin's Corner was born.

Calvin's Corner was founded by Alexis Day in memory of her beloved dog, Calvin. After experiencing firsthand how overwhelming veterinary care can become when a pet is facing serious illness, Alexis created Calvin's Corner to help other families facing the difficult intersection of loving their pet and struggling to afford the care they need.
Through Calvin's Corner, Calvin's legacy continues by helping pets receive necessary veterinary care and remain with the families who love them.
